ChatGPT is a new auction.
We bid with the tracking on.

People use ChatGPT to compare options and decide what to do next. OpenAI now sells ad space below those answers. We set up your account, wire the tracking first, and run a measured test, so you learn whether the channel pays before you scale it.

Three Pieces of the Lane

What we run on ChatGPT.

ChatGPT ads show below an answer, matched to what the person is asking about. OpenAI says people are often comparing options in those moments, and there are no keywords to buy. The work is in the signal: tracking, context, and creative.

Account and tracking

Your business owns the OpenAI Ads Manager account and the billing. We get a role inside it, help you through business verification, and install measurement before a single ad runs.

Context hints and creative

There are no keywords to bid on. You describe when your ad is relevant through context hints, and OpenAI matches it to conversations. We write those hints and enough ad variations for the system to find the right moments.

  • Objective chosen for your data (clicks first)
  • Context hints per service line
  • Multiple titles, descriptions and images
  • Country down to ZIP code, where available

Reporting you can check

OpenAI, GA4 and your CRM will not show the same numbers, and OpenAI says so too. We put them side by side, label modeled conversions as modeled, and judge the channel on leads you can trace.

  • Modeled conversions labeled, not hidden

The Test Protocol

How we run a new auction.

Four phases. Qualify, wire, test, decide. A new channel earns a bigger budget by proving itself against the channels you already pay for.

01Phase 1

Qualify

Is your category allowed? OpenAI currently limits ads mainly to consumer categories and approves some others case by case. We check your category against its ad policies, plus your landing pages and current tracking, before anything is built.

Yield · Go or no-go, in writing
02Phase 2

Wire

Account, verification, Pixel, lead events, UTMs and GA4. We test every event fires before any ad goes to OpenAI for review.

Yield · Tracking you can audit
03Phase 3

Test

A controlled budget on a Clicks campaign, with several ad variations and context hints per service. Once enough leads come through, we test a Conversions campaign.

Yield · Real cost per lead
04Phase 4

Decide

We compare ChatGPT cost per lead to your search and social numbers and make a plain call: scale it, hold it, or stop spending.

Yield · A decision, not a dashboard
The Platform, Plainly

How ChatGPT ads work.

ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's ad platform, bought through Ads Manager at ads.openai.com. Everything below comes from OpenAI's own documentation. It is still a beta, so we re-check the details before every launch.

Where the ad shows up.

The ad sits below a ChatGPT response, clearly labeled and kept separate from the answer. Each unit carries your brand name, your logo, a title, a short description, an image and a link to your landing page. OpenAI states that ads do not influence what ChatGPT answers.

Ads show to people on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users do not see them, and neither do accounts identified as under 18.

  • Below the answer · never inside it
  • Free and Go plans, no under-18 accounts
  • Desktop web, iOS and Android
  • Self-serve in the US and 60+ countries

How the ad gets picked.

There are no keywords to buy. OpenAI's system weighs the conversation and what the person is trying to do, your landing page, your title and copy, and the context hints you write for each ad group. When a user has ads personalization turned on, it can also use select signals from their wider ChatGPT use. A relevance-weighted, second-price auction then picks among the eligible ads.

Advertisers never see the chats. Reporting comes back aggregated: impressions, clicks, spend and conversions, not prompts. Want to appear inside the answer instead of below it? That is AI search optimization, and no ad budget buys it.

  • Context hints guide matching · not exact match
  • Relevance-weighted, second-price auction
  • Ads kept away from sensitive chats
  • No advertiser access to conversations
Objectives, Bids, Budgets

How you pay for it.

Every campaign runs on one objective, and the objective cannot be changed after the campaign is created. OpenAI bills per 1,000 impressions or per valid click. You never pay per conversion.

01
Reach
Views · CPM

Views

Billed per 1,000 impressions. Built for visibility, not leads, so it says little about what a customer costs. For a business that runs on leads, we start with Clicks instead.

  • Max CPM bid set per ad group
  • Judged on reach, not leads
  • Useful for a launch or a brand push
02
Traffic
Clicks · CPC

Clicks

Billed per valid click. OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click, or letting its Maximize results strategy set bids. This is where our tests start: real visitors, real landing-page behavior, a first cost per lead.

  • Manual max bid or Maximize results
  • OpenAI suggests $3 to $5 to start
  • First honest read on cost per lead
03
Leads
Conversions · oCPC or oCPM

Conversions

The system optimizes toward one supported standard event from OpenAI conversion tracking, billed per click or per 1,000 impressions. One event per campaign, and it cannot be swapped later, so we only move here once tracking is proven.

  • One standard event per campaign
  • Billed per click or per 1,000 views
  • Unlocked after tracking is verified

Budgets behave differently too. A daily budget is an average across a Sunday to Saturday week, so a single day can spend up to twice the daily figure. The floor is $25 a day in US dollars. Card-billed accounts are charged each time unpaid spend reaches a payment threshold, plus any balance left at month end. We set budgets with that swing in mind.

Setup, Step by Step

How to advertise on ChatGPT.

The path OpenAI documents for a new advertiser, in order. Half the work happens before a single ad exists. We handle each step with you.

01Step 1

Create the account

Sign in at ads.openai.com with an OpenAI login and create the advertiser account. Country, currency and time zone cannot be changed once it exists, so they get set right the first time.

Yield · Locked settings, checked
02Step 2

Names, billing, verification

Ads Manager keeps three names: account, brand and legal. The brand name is what people see beside the ad. Billing and verification must be complete before anything delivers.

Yield · Brand shown correctly
03Step 3

Open the door to OpenAI

OpenAI's OAI-AdsBot crawler has to reach your landing pages for ad review. Firewalls, bot protection and robots.txt rules can block it. We test access before any ad is submitted.

Yield · Pages reachable
04Step 4

Wire the tracking

OpenAI Pixel through Google Tag Manager, a supported standard event for leads or bookings, UTMs on every ad URL, and a test that each event actually fires.

Yield · Events verified
05Step 5

Build the campaign

Objective, budget, dates, countries and platforms. To run in the US only, the US has to be included on purpose. Excluding other countries does not limit delivery.

Yield · Spend fenced in
06Step 6

Map the ad groups

One ad group per service or customer need, each with its own context hints and either a max bid or OpenAI's Maximize results bidding.

Yield · Intent mapped
07Step 7

Write the ads

Several titles, descriptions and images per ad group, each a different angle, each pointing to the most relevant page rather than the homepage.

Yield · Coverage, not one ad
08Step 8

Review, launch, read

Every ad passes OpenAI review first. Once live, clicks report in about 15 minutes, spend can lag 7 to 8 hours, and conversions can take 24 to 48 hours.

Yield · The right clock
Targeting and Creative

Context, not keywords.

On ChatGPT you describe the customer and the moment, and the system looks for matching conversations. Specific beats clever, every time.

Writing context hints.

OpenAI's guidance is to say what you offer, who it helps and when it is useful, one idea per hint, in plain language. "Water heater replacement for older homes that have lost hot water" tells the system far more than "water heater."

Hints shape relevance only. They cannot enforce a service area, a schedule or an exclusion, so those limits go in the campaign's own delivery controls, where OpenAI offers them.

  • What, who, when · one idea per hint
  • Country, state, city or ZIP, where available
  • Desktop, iOS and Android, chosen per campaign
  • Custom audiences once 25,000+ users match

Creative that earns the click.

OpenAI favors volume and variety: several distinct titles and descriptions per offer, each from a different angle, written to be useful rather than catchy. The landing page should match the ad instead of defaulting to the homepage, and images should stay simple and on message.

Every ad is reviewed against OpenAI's policies, and misleading or inconsistent ads get rejected. We write to that standard from the first draft.

  • Benefit first: what it is, who it is for
  • Distinct angles, not reworded copies
  • Ad and landing page tell the same story
  • UTMs on every creative URL

Test Now or Wait

Should you test it yet?

An honest filter. Being early only pays if you can measure what you bought.

Worth a test now.

  • Your category is on OpenAI's allowed list
  • Your Google or Meta tracking already ties spend to leads
  • Your buyers ask questions before they choose
  • You can fund a test without starving proven channels
  • Your landing pages answer those questions clearly

Better to wait.

  • Your category is restricted or not allowed yet
  • You cannot trace today's leads to their source
  • Your core search budget is still underfunded
  • You need predictable lead volume this quarter
  • Nobody can watch a new channel closely

ChatGPT ads questions, answered

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?+
You set the budget. OpenAI charges per 1,000 impressions or per click, depending on the campaign objective, and you never pay per conversion. For click campaigns OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. Our management fee is separate from what you pay OpenAI, and we quote it before you sign anything.
Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads?+
OpenAI sets a minimum daily budget of $25 per campaign for accounts billed in US dollars. That is the floor, not a recommendation. A useful test needs enough clicks to show what a lead costs, so we size the budget to your market and say so if the number does not make sense.
Who are ChatGPT ads for?+
Businesses in the categories OpenAI allows. Its ad policies (updated September 10, 2026) say ads are primarily limited to consumer categories: lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences, and digital products or education. All other categories are disallowed at launch, with financial, healthcare and legal advertisers approved case by case. Alcohol and tobacco, gambling, weapons, cannabis, dating and sexual content, political content, and individual job or housing listings are not allowed. Ads show to people on the Free and Go plans, not to Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise users, and not to accounts identified as under 18. We check your category against the policy first.
How are ChatGPT ads different from Google Ads?+
Google Ads matches your ad to keywords someone typed. ChatGPT matches your ad to the conversation, guided by context hints you write, and the ad appears below the answer. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT answers. Google Ads has years of benchmarks; OpenAI states ChatGPT Ads has none yet. For most businesses it is a test alongside search, not a replacement.
How do you track ChatGPT ad results?+
We install the OpenAI Pixel through Google Tag Manager, map your lead or booking events, and add UTM tags so every click shows up in GA4. Then we compare OpenAI, GA4 and your CRM side by side, because the three will count differently.
Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT says?+
No. OpenAI states that ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from the answer, and do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Advertisers do not see private conversations; reporting is aggregated.
How do I advertise on ChatGPT?+
Sign up at ads.openai.com, create the advertiser account, and finish billing and verification. Add conversion tracking, make sure OpenAI's crawler can reach your landing pages, then build a campaign, ad groups with context hints, and ads. Ads go live only after OpenAI review. We run that setup with you and hold spend until tracking is verified.
Can I target keywords or specific prompts on ChatGPT?+
No. There are no keywords and no way to pick prompts. You write context hints for each ad group, and OpenAI weighs them with the conversation, your landing page and your ad copy to judge relevance. Hints do not guarantee delivery in any particular conversation.
Can I see which prompts triggered my ads?+
No. OpenAI does not share conversations with advertisers. You get aggregated reporting: impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC and CPM, and conversions, which can be broken down by device, country and platform.
Do ChatGPT ads help my business show up in ChatGPT answers?+
No. OpenAI keeps ads separate from answers and says ads do not influence them. Showing up inside the answer is earned through content, technical access and consistent facts about your business across the web. That is the work of our AI search optimization service.
How fast do ChatGPT ad results show up in reporting?+
Impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes. Spend can lag 7 to 8 hours, and attributed conversions can take 24 to 48 hours. OpenAI reports conversions on a 7, 14 or 30 day click window, with an optional 1 day view window. We judge a test on weeks of data, never on the first day.
Is advertising on ChatGPT worth it?+
It depends on your category, your tracking and your margins. OpenAI states there are no performance benchmarks for the platform yet. It is worth a measured test if your category is allowed, your current tracking already ties spend to leads, and you can fund the test without starving channels that work. The test exists to answer that question with your own numbers.
Which countries can run ChatGPT ads?+
OpenAI lists self-serve Ads Manager as available to businesses in the United States and more than 60 other countries. New self-serve accounts may start limited to their home country until identity verification is approved and enough spend has run there.
